Abstract

Extended Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: In modern management, the term “learning organization” refers to organizations that continuously enhance their capacity to create, acquire, and transfer knowledge, while also recognizing the similarities and differences between their own management environments and systems and those found elsewhere in the world (Haghighi & Momeni Mayani, 2005, p. 5). Consequently, the comparative study of organizations—which focuses on the similarities and differences within organizational systems—is of undeniable importance.
Throughout human history, organizations have emerged in various forms to achieve diverse objectives. In this context, the story of Prophet Noah’s (PBUH) shipbuilding—as recounted in the Holy Quran—is not merely a religious narrative; it stands as a unique archetype of an industrial undertaking (Tabataba’i, 1985; Makarem Shirazi, 1991; Ghara’ati, 1996) established to confront a colossal environmental challenge. The remarkable and magnificent discovery of Noah’s Ark in the land of Judi bears witness to an advanced culture and civilization brought into existence by Prophet Noah through divine revelation; it speaks to the ingenuity of humankind in ages past. “Research indicates that humanity was highly advanced and civilized, both during that era and prior to it” (Biazar Shirazi, 2010, p. 10).
Given this context, the concept of the “learning organization” is primarily discussed within the realm of manufacturing and industrial organizations. Therefore, examining this concept within the framework of the construction of Noah’s Ark—which is considered a monumental historical industrial undertaking—is both appropriate and applicable. Accordingly, the primary objective of this article is to examine and analyze the principles of the “learning organization” within the context of Prophet Noah’s shipbuilding project. By conducting a comparative study of this endeavor, the aim is to supplement the existing framework of the learning organization—addressing aspects that appear to be missing—and to derive a model applicable to contemporary organizations.
Method: The present study is applied in purpose, exploratory in nature, qualitative in approach, and descriptive-analytical in methodology. Data collection relied on library and documentary research, utilizing the technique of systematic note-taking. However, the data analysis employed the ijtihadi (reasoning-based) method common in religious texts, focusing on a Quranic discourse analysis; this analytical approach is evident in Zamakhshari’s rhetorical method regarding description (Zamakhshari, 1407 AH) and in the exegetical methods of Ibn Kathir and Tabataba’i at the level of interpretation (Ibn Kathir, 1415 AH; Tabataba’i, 1985).
Here, a Quranic discourse analysis is conducted with an emphasis on the “central theme”; furthermore, a comparative study is undertaken between two phenomena: learning organizations and Noah’s Ark.
A comparative study of the “learning organization” and Noah’s Ark is conducted using George Bereday’s method, applying Watkins and Marsick’s indicators to the data.
Discussion and Conclusion: An examination and analysis of the research findings reveal that, despite differences in terms of time, nature, social and cultural contexts, as well as underlying principles and components, the practical principles (five principles) governing Noah’s shipbuilding project are remarkably similar to—and applicable within—the framework of a learning organization.
The results indicate that, in today’s competitive era, an organization is truly responsive if it functions as an “education-based learning organization.” Such an organization incorporates components and elements—such as personal mastery, mental models, shared vision, team learning, systems thinking, training, supervision, adherence to standards (rather than personal connections), and systems of reward and recognition. In this type of organization, leadership assumes the roles of steward, designer, coach, and servant. The figure below illustrates the model of an education-oriented learning organization. As a result, it can be said that the innovation of the present research is a model entitled “Education-Based Learning Organization” that has the organizational principles, components, and leadership roles as shown in Figure (3).
